Parametric Pumpkins

Robotic installation showcasing mass-customization for KUKA CEE in Zurich, Switzerland. A novel method for interfacing with an industrial robot arm for automated processing on organic surfaces. As a case study, Creative Robotics’ Automated Pumpkin Carving was designed and exhibited during the KUKA Insights event held in October 2019 in Zurich, Switzerland. Participants were invited to interact with a KUKA industrial robot via a custom designed touch screen tablet to draw shapes that the robot would then replicate over the non-uniform curved surface of a pumpkin. The installation extends the notion of physicalising the digital and uses three-dimensional scanning techniques to digitally reconstruct organic forms.
